Sweden with Kids: A Personal Guide to Family Adventures

"Shaun the Sheep Land" at Skåne Animal Park

Sweden is a giant, safe, and incredibly clean playground. Having lived and worked here for nearly three decades, and having raised my own daughter (born 2001) and son (born 2005) in this beautiful country, I can tell you one thing for sure: Sweden is arguably one of the most family-friendly countries in the world. Whether you are trekking through the deep forests of Småland or exploring the vibrant streets of Stockholm, you will find that children are not just “tolerated” here – they are the VIPs.

Over the years, I have watched my own kids grow up with a deep love for Swedish nature and city life. Thanks to their curiosity, I have experienced countless activities that I might have otherwise missed. Our family trips have taken us from the tiny red cottages of the south to the wild landscapes of the north.

Amusement parks

If you ask my kids about their absolute highlights, two names always come up: Liseberg in Gothenburg and Gröna Lund in Stockholm.

Liseberg is the largest amusement park in Scandinavia and, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful in the world. It is not just about the adrenaline-pumping rollercoasters; it is the atmosphere, the flowers, and the legendary “Liseberg Wheel.”

On the other hand, Gröna Lund offers a completely different vibe. Located right on the water on the island of Djurgården, it is more compact and historic. There is something magical about riding a carousel while looking out over the Stockholm archipelago.

But there is so much more to discover beyond the big rides:

Final thoughts

As you can see from the highlights above, the variety of activities is endless. But what makes Sweden truly special for parents?

Whether you are boarding a train or visiting a museum, everything is designed to make your life easier. Most restaurants have high chairs, and the “Allemansrätten” (the Right of Public Access) means you can take your kids into the woods to pick berries and mushrooms almost anywhere.

And the best part? The safety. You will notice it the moment you arrive. The pace of life is slower here, and the focus is on quality family time. Seeing Sweden through the eyes of my children has been one of my greatest joys here. I am certain your family will feel the same magic.
