When you think of spectacular modern architecture, Sweden might not be the first place that springs to mind – but the stunning Emporia shopping center in Malmö will completely change your perspective. Nestled in the rapidly growing district of Hyllie, this retail giant is far more than just a place to pick up souvenirs. Over nearly three decades of living, working, and traveling across Sweden, I have seen many shopping destinations come and go, but Emporia remains an absolute masterpiece. It effortlessly combines world-class Nordic design, an incredible variety of shops, and a forward-thinking approach to urban sustainability that makes it well worth a spot on your Swedish travel itinerary.
Whether you are looking for the latest Scandinavian fashion trends or just want to marvel at one of Europe’s most unique architectural gems, here is everything you need to know before you go.
A retail giant with artistic soul
Designed by the renowned architect Gert Wingårdh, Emporia is officially one of the largest shopping centers in Europe. It boasts a massive retail area of 68,000 square meters and houses around 200 diverse shops. What truly sets it apart from your average suburban mall, however, is its commitment to aesthetics. As you stroll through the bright, airy corridors, you will notice a wealth of carefully selected artwork integrated into the building itself.
When the complex first opened its doors back in 2012, it completely revolutionized the local retail landscape. Today, it offers a fantastic mix of retail therapy. You will find standard Swedish high-street staples like H&M, Indiska, and KappAhl, alongside high-end designer boutiques such as Desigual, Filippa K, and Royal Underwear.
When I visited a few years ago, I did notice some empty shop fronts, particularly up on the third floor. But things are changing fast. Hyllie is booming, and with a brand-new 29-story office tower nearby alongside hundreds of fresh residential apartments, the area is pulsing with new life.
The spectacular rooftop park and dual facades
One of the absolute highlights of Emporia is actually located right on top of it. The building features an incredible rooftop park spanning more than 26,000 square meters.
And the best part? It is completely free and open to the public.
From this green oasis, you can enjoy sweeping panoramic views that stretch all the way to the iconic Öresund Bridge connecting Sweden to Denmark. The park also hosts various community events throughout the year. Even better, this massive green roof is one of the main reasons Emporia earned the proud title of being Sweden’s very first environmentally certified shopping center.

Before you head inside, make sure to take a walk around the exterior to view the two distinct main entrances. The architecture is a triumph both inside and out:
- The amber entrance: Facing the train station, this famous, sweeping golden-hued glass facade is heavily photographed and serves as the main gateway for rail passengers.
- The blue entrance: Located on the sea-facing side of the complex, this entry point features a cooler, equally dramatic blue glass design that is a bit of a hidden gem for photographers.
At the heart of Malmö’s entertainment hub
Emporia does not stand alone – it is the anchor of a massive entertainment and exhibition hub in Hyllie. Right next door, you will find the impressive Malmö Arena. Opened in 2008, this modern venue is the proud home of the local ice hockey team and regularly plays host to major international music concerts and events.
Just a short walk away is the Malmömässan exhibition center, making this neighborhood the definitive go-to spot for trade fairs and major events in southern Sweden.

How to get there from the city center
Getting to Emporia from the heart of the city could not be easier. If you have purchased a standard 24-hour or 72-hour local transit ticket, it is fully valid for the short train ride from Malmö Central Station to Hyllie.
Here is a quick insider tip on choosing your train:
- Öresundståg: This regional train utilizes the Citytunnel infrastructure and whisks you straight to Hyllie in a mere six minutes. Just keep your eyes open and make sure you actually get off at the Hyllie station – otherwise, you will find yourself heading across the bridge straight into Copenhagen!
- Pågatågen: These local commuter trains also service the route, but they make a few extra stops along the way, making the journey slightly longer.
Conclusion
Whether you are looking for a rainy-day refuge, a fashion refresh, or just want to admire cutting-edge Scandinavian design, a trip out to Emporia is a fantastic way to experience modern Malmö at its best.
