Malmö is a city of stunning contrasts, where the futuristic architecture of Västra Hamnen stands just a short walk away from the cobblestone streets of the historic center. This central heart is known as Gamla Staden, Malmö’s old town. Walking through this neighborhood always feels like stepping back in time. Over the years, I have found that while Malmö constantly reinvents itself, Gamla Staden remains the true soul of the city. With roots stretching deep into the Middle Ages, these historic streets seamlessly blend centuries-old architecture with a thriving, modern culinary and design scene. It is the absolute perfect place to start your exploration of southern Sweden.
Gamla Staden is beautifully defined by geography. The historic district is bordered to the north, east, and south by scenic canals – specifically the Rörsjökanalen and Södra Förstadskanalen – and to the west by Slottsgatan. Within these boundaries lies a network of charming alleys and no fewer than five grand public squares, each possessing its own unique personality and atmosphere.
Stortorget and the grand seat of history
When I first visited this spot nearly three decades ago, the sheer scale of Stortorget immediately caught my attention. Constructed in the 1530s, this massive square serves as the historic anchor of Gamla Staden. The dominant feature here is the magnificent Malmö Rådhus (Town Hall), a striking building that showcases a beautiful Dutch Renaissance style facade added during the 19th century.
Right next to the square, you will find the impressive Sankt Petri Kyrka (St. Peter’s Church). Tucked just behind the Town Hall, this is Malmö’s oldest surviving building, dating back to the early 14th century. When you step inside the soaring, whitewashed interior, take a close look at the old gravestones and memorial plaques. You will notice a significant amount of German text carved into the stone – a fascinating historical footprint left behind by the successful Hanseatic merchants who transformed Malmö into a major trading hub.
If you appreciate historic dining, the square is also home to the traditions-rich Rådhuskällern, where you can enjoy a memorable meal inside the vaulted cellars beneath the Town Hall.
Lilla Torg and the vibrant nightlife
Just a few steps from the grandeur of Stortorget lies its smaller, incredibly lively neighbor: Lilla Torg. While Stortorget represents the political history of Malmö, Lilla Torg is the undisputed epicenter of social life. Built in 1592 to accommodate a growing marketplace, the square is surrounded by beautifully preserved timber-framed buildings that look like they belong in a storybook.
Today, these historic structures house some of the best restaurants, bars, and cafés in the city. The atmosphere here is infectious, especially as evening approaches. Locals and visitors alike gather here to enjoy a drink or a hearty meal. Thanks to heavy-duty outdoor heaters and cozy blankets, the bustling outdoor seating culture here regularly stretches late into November.
And the best part?
If you plan to visit on a Friday or Saturday night, a word of advice from my decades of exploring the city: making a restaurant reservation is absolutely essential if you want to eat anywhere after 20:00. If you are traveling on a budget, try visiting around lunchtime instead. The square is much quieter, the historic architecture is easier to photograph, and many restaurants offer fantastic lunch specials (dagens lunch) that are significantly cheaper than the dinner menu.

Scandinavian design at Hedmanska gården
Lilla Torg is not just about dining and nightlife. Tucked away in one of the square’s most beautiful corners is Hedmanska gården, a stunning half-timbered courtyard that dates back to the 16th century. This courtyard serves as the entrance to the famous Form-Design Center.
This vibrant cultural hub is a must-see for anyone interested in classic and contemporary Scandinavian style. Run as a non-profit association, the center features rotating exhibitions, educational spaces, and a fantastic shop. It showcases the very best of Nordic craftsmanship, industrial design, architecture, and everyday textiles. After browsing the exhibitions, you can relax at the cozy on-site café hidden away from the busy crowds of the main square.
Exploring the grand southern squares
As you venture further south through Gamla Staden, the architecture shifts and the spaces open up. You will eventually reach Gustav Adolfs Torg, a sprawling square that acts as a bridge between the historic old town and the newer shopping districts. The streets branching off this square are filled with fantastic local spots – including classic corner pubs like the popular venues along Malmborgsgatan.
Here is why you should keep walking:
Continuing your trek, you will encounter Drottningtorget, a square often bustling with local markets and events, and Södertull. Södertull has truly transformed over recent years, earning a reputation as Malmö’s premier urban sun terrace. Located right along the southern canal bend, it features wide steps leading down to the water, making it the perfect spot to grab an ice cream, sit back, and watch the canal boats pass by on a warm summer afternoon.
Practical tips for visiting Gamla Staden
Getting around Gamla Staden could not be easier. The entire district is highly pedestrianized and incredibly compact. The walk from Malmö Central Station to Stortorget takes less than five minutes, making the old town perfectly accessible even if you are just visiting Malmö on a day trip from Copenhagen.
The best way to experience the neighborhood is simply to get lost in the narrow side streets between the major squares. Keep your eyes open for architectural gems, small independent boutiques, and quiet courtyards that many hurried tourists completely miss.

It is a place where history is not just locked away in a museum – it is lived every single day.
