Gothenburg’s Ocean Bus: A Splashy Sightseeing Adventure on Land and Water

Sightseeing tour on land and water: the Ocean Bus in Gothenburg

Gothenburg is a city defined by water, but nothing prepares you for the moment your tour bus suddenly drives straight into the Göta älv river with a massive splash. It is one of those “only in Sweden” experiences that turns a standard sightseeing trip into a genuine adventure. Having explored Gothenburg for nearly three decades, I have seen many tours come and go, but the Ocean Bus – or the “Shark Bus” as locals call it – remains one of the most exciting ways to see the city from a totally different perspective.

The thrill of the splashdown

It is an exciting, even breathtaking feeling when the ten-ton amphibious bus lands with a splash in the water. I still remember the first time I saw this beast cruising down Kungsportsavenyn. It looks like a normal bus, albeit a very tall one painted like a giant shark, but its true magic happens when the asphalt ends.

The transition is the absolute highlight. The bus plunges from the shore into the water at the harbour entrance in the centre of Gothenburg. The music gets louder, the guide starts the countdown, and then – splash! Before you know it, you are floating. After a couple of minutes of cruising, the guide usually explains the fascinating tech behind how a 10-ton bus transforms into a boat.

Best of Gothenburg from the Shark Bus

The journey begins at Stora Teatern, the beautiful musical and theatre building in the heart of the city. Look for the blue flag – that’s where the shark is waiting. Before the big splash, you get a “best-of” tour of Gothenburg’s land-based landmarks.

The route takes you past iconic spots such as:

  • Avenyn – the city’s main boulevard.
  • Poseidon – the famous statue at Götaplatsen.
  • Liseberg – Scandinavia’s largest amusement park.
  • Feskekörka – the iconic “Fish Church” market hall.
  • Chalmers University of Technology and Järntorget.

Once you are afloat, the perspective changes entirely. You cruise under the massive Älvsborg Bridge, pass the historic Eriksberg gantry crane, and get a close-up look at the Gothenburg Harbour. You’ll see big ships entering the city while hearing the story of how Gothenburg was built not once, but twice.

The view is fantastic. The bus travels with the windows open, but if it rains or gets too windy, they can be closed to keep everyone dry.

Humour, history, and “Gothenburg spirit”

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that a tour is only as good as its guide. The Ocean Bus guides are legendary for their energy. They provide live commentary in English and Swedish, mixing hard historical facts with plenty of “Gothenburg humour” and anecdotes.

Ever wondered why there is a statue called the Sailor’s Wife watching over the harbour? Or what life was like in the old shipyard days? The guides weave these stories together with a great soundtrack that keeps the atmosphere high-energy throughout the 60-minute duration.

Practical tips for your trip

Since the demand is high all year round, you should definitely plan ahead. Here is what you need to know before you go:

  • Weather: Wear weather-appropriate clothing. The river breeze can be chilly even in summer!
  • Meeting point: Meet outside the Grand Theatre (Stora Teatern). You can go directly to the bus with your voucher.
  • Restrictions: The tour is not suitable for children under 3 years or people with mobility impairments.
  • Food & drinks: You are not permitted to eat or drink onboard.

The bus runs almost all year round. While the peak season is April to September, seeing the winter harbour from the water is a unique experience. Just make sure to buy your tickets in advance!

Over the years, I’ve found that the best memories come from those moments when you step slightly out of the ordinary. Driving a bus into a river certainly qualifies.
