Stockholm has a private photo museum that attracts many visitors. Fotografiska is located on Södermalm, just 400 meters from the Slussen carousel. The museum is easily accessible from the old town of Gamla Stan. It not only attracts art lovers. Many also visit the museum to enjoy the view, take a fika break, eat well, or buy a gift from the shop.
The photo museum opened in 2010. It is housed in an old warehouse and customs house in the port. The building was extensively remodeled for this purpose. It belongs to the port and therefore to the city of Stockholm. Address: Stadsgardshamnen 22.
The building was originally intended for the ABBA Museum, which eventually came about in a new building on Djurgården a few years later.
Major exhibitions
Fotografiska in Stockholm was founded by the brothers Jan and Per Broman. The opening exhibition was dedicated to Annie Leibovitz. Since then, the museum has repeatedly drawn attention to itself with spectacular exhibitions.
There are now several Fotografiska branches outside of Sweden.
You can find them in New York ( Fotografiska New York), Berlin and Tallinn.
Jan Broman is also founder of the very popular Paradox Museum in Stockholm.
Briefly “Fotografiska”
Incidentally, the people of Stockholm refer to the museum as “Fotografiska”, i.e. not “Fotografiska Museum”. This is also meant to avoid confusion with the photography department of Stockholm’s Museum of Modern Art.
