The Lights in Alingsås festival, an urban lighting exhibition

Every October since the year 2000, leading lighting designers have been invited to Alingsås near Gothenburg to demonstrate their expertise. For five weeks, dark evenings and outdoor environments are turned into fascinating and exciting lighting installations.

Cold, anonymous facades are transformed into warm and colorful spaces, forest lakes can get a whole new perspective, and these oases of light provide new attractive venues in the town. The lighting designs can be both inviting and spooky – see our pictures that we made during a guided tour a few yeras ago.

Largest lighting festival in Northern Europe

Lights in Alingsås attracts more than 85 000 visitors every year, and the urban lighting exhibition has become the largest lighting event in public spaces in Northern Europe. Lights in Alingsås is an important meeting point for lighting designers, students and professionals who work with light. The owner of the project is the municipality of Alingsås, who make the project possible through local partners.

Grants for international lights-students

Every year, more than 60 lighting designers and architecture students come to Alingsås to participate in the prestigious workshop organized by the Lights in Alingsås festival.

But students come from all over the world and for some of them the trip can be expensive. Grants are therefore awarded to some design students who wish to take part in the Lights in Alingsås workshop.

After a week’s intensive training the students will participate in creating the installations which will make up the Lights in Alingsås light trail.
