Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö – 50th anniversary of ABBA’s victory

This year, Sweden hosts the finale of the Eurovision Song Contest for the seventh time. It will be held at Malmö Arena on Saturday, May 11th, with Semi-Finals on Tuesday May 7th, and Thursday May 9th.

The Swedish public TV channel SVT will stage this year’s competition in Malmö following Loreen’s historic win in Liverpool last year. Loreen became the first woman to win the Eurovision Song Contest twice. Simultaneously, Sweden equalled Ireland’s record of 7 wins in total.

This year’s Eurovision Song Contest will be the 68th.

Malmö will host ESC for the third time

Malmö will become the third city to host the world’s largest music event a total of three times. The Swedish capital Stockholm and neighbouring Copenhagen have also hosted three times to date. Only London, Luxembourg City and Dublin have hosted more Contests.

Malmö was chosen to welcome participating public broadcasters following a city bid process that examined facilities at the venue, local infrastructure, and the ability to accommodate thousands of visiting delegations, crew, fans and journalists.

50 years since Brighton 1974

What makes the event extra special is that 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of ABBA’s epic win in Brighton, where they impressed everyone with “Waterloo” on April 6th, 1974.
