Universeum: Sweden’s ultimate science and nature adventure
If you are touring the area with family, making a trip to Universeum is an absolute priority. Spanning a vast 7,000 square meters, this hands-on science center aims to inspire a passion for natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics in children. It is a major destination for local school field trips, and it is easy to understand why. If you want to check out every single section of this massive complex, be prepared for an engaging three-kilometer walk through its various themed zones.
One of the most remarkable features of Universeum is its indoor rainforest, which is filled with tropical warmth, high humidity, and exotic creatures. You will find native Scandinavian birds, fish, and reptiles alongside international residents like colorful parrots and toxic amphibians. In the deep ocean area, you can step inside a magnificent glass tunnel beneath the main aquarium to view massive sharks gliding directly over your head. Visitors were permitted to touch certain fish in the early days, but during my stay in January 2026, I noticed this practice has fortunately been ended to protect the creatures’ well-being.

Beyond the biological exhibits, Universeum offers a chance to blast off into outer space. You can experience the solar system using all your senses – including an interactive setup where you are suspended by ropes to feel exactly how gravity operates on the moon’s surface. The core message here is demonstrating how humanity, nature, society, and modern technology are all interconnected.
Looking for a place where the kids can run around? The facility features a massive play and adventure zone. While the specific activities have changed since the opening years – when children could climb inside emergency vehicles, ride a horse simulator, or interact with digital fish schools – the current layout provides hours of continuous fun. There is always something lively going on.
The striking building itself was envisioned by the prominent Swedish architect Gerd Wingårdh. Featuring a bold exterior made of timber, glass, and concrete, it was built following strict ecological guidelines to minimize energy consumption. It is situated right at Korsvägen – immediately adjacent to the famous Liseberg amusement park. In the summer of 2023, a brand-new expansion added a seventh floor topped by a giant spherical structure. This sphere contains a spectacular dome theater called Wisdome. On the other hand, the original inclined cable car that used to take guests up to the sixth floor had to be permanently retired due to frequent mechanical malfunctions, though its tracks remain visible below the dome structure.
Universeum is open throughout the year and offers an excellent gift shop, a ground-floor cafe, a restaurant on the second level, and countless interactive play options. Although tickets require a significant financial investment, the experience is worth every single krona. A great piece of insider advice: you can temporarily leave the building for a rest break and re-enter later using the same ticket – just remember to confirm this policy with the staff on arrival as terms can change.

World of Volvo: A masterpiece of Scandinavian architecture and automotive history
For decades, admirers of classic Swedish engineering made their way to the traditional Volvo Museum located in the industrial zone of Arendal on Hisingen. That original exhibition, which opened back in 1995, focused purely on displaying cars. However, that old venue has now closed permanently. Since the spring of 2024, a spectacular new destination has arrived right in central Gothenburg: World of Volvo.
Positioned at the highly accessible location of Lyckholms Torg 1 (just behind Mölndalsvägen 30), this brand-new exhibition center greets visitors with spectacular Scandinavian architecture. Designed by the famous Copenhagen firm Henning Larsen, the circular structure is modeled after a massive tree growing directly out of the stone bedrock. Featuring expansive floor-to-ceiling glass windows and extensive use of natural wood, the entire space feels incredibly bright, open, and welcoming. It occupies the site of the former Saab gearbox plant, conveniently located right next to the Liseberg amusement park. Believe me, the spectacular building alone makes a visit well worth your time.
World of Volvo is consciously designed to engage everyone, not just dedicated automotive fans. You will find plenty of peaceful seating areas where you can simply relax and look out through the towering glass facades. For families, there are brilliant interactive areas where both children and adults can operate real mini excavators to dig through a giant sea of balls. The center also functions as a lively cultural hub, hosting special temporary displays, guest presentations, premium dining venues, conference spaces, and a diverse lineup of live entertainment – ranging from chamber music and jazz concerts to holiday events and performances by the Gothenburg Opera’s dance company.

Approximately half of Volvo’s ever-growing collection of historic vehicles, along with a vast archive of classic photos and documents, has relocated to this new facility, and the specific exhibits are expected to rotate over time. The center is run as a joint venture between Volvo Cars (the passenger car side, currently under Chinese ownership) and the Volvo Group (the Swedish-owned commercial truck and bus branch). When I explored the complex in January 2026 – right when Gothenburg was covered by the deepest snowfall the city had seen in thirty years – every single staff member I spoke with was wonderfully friendly, helpful, and eager to share stories. The atmosphere here is exceptionally pleasant.
If you choose to arrive by vehicle, finding a spot is effortless. Directly adjacent to the experience center, the city has constructed Gothenburg’s largest parking structure, Liseberg Södra, which features a capacity of 1,550 vehicles to accommodate visitors heading to both World of Volvo and the theme park.

Världskulturmuseet: Thought-provoking global culture for a younger crowd
Right in the immediate neighborhood of Universeum and Liseberg sits the Världskulturmuseet (Museum of World Culture), which first opened its doors in 2004. If you are expecting a traditional, stuffy museum focused on dusty historical collections, you are in for a pleasant surprise. This highly modern cultural institution draws a remarkably youthful crowd, with an estimated 60% of guests under the age of 30.
The museum addresses global issues, contemporary questions, and diverse international lifestyles in unconventional, sometimes wonderfully thought-provoking ways. Instead of relying on static permanent collections with heavy labeling, the Världskulturmuseet relies entirely on rotating temporary displays and organizes hundreds of vibrant live events and activities each year. Historic artifacts do appear in beautiful glass display cases, but they are utilized strictly as illustrative elements to frame modern debates and encourage deeper reflection.
The building features exceptionally generous, sunlit public areas. Children of all ages are treated to fantastic interactive play spaces and hands-on discovery rooms scattered throughout the halls. Keep in mind that in several of these interactive galleries, visitors are asked to leave their shoes at the entrance – though comfortable felt slippers are readily provided. Because the entire schedule of exhibits changes constantly, every visit brings something completely fresh.
As a major advantage, visiting this museum is affordable, and entry is completely free for anyone under 19. It also offers a much calmer, more relaxed pacing than its frequently busy neighbors. Don’t skip the excellent museum café either; it is highly recommended for its great coffee, fresh pastries, delicious baguettes, and an excellent warm lunch buffet option during midday.

Sjöfartsmuseet Akvariet: Maritime history and a massive underground ocean
Gothenburg’s heritage is fundamentally tied to the sea, and there is no better place to experience this nautical history than the iconic Sjöfartsmuseet Akvariet (Maritime Museum Aquarium). The undisputed highlight of this upgrade is a brand-new, underground aquarium facility covering 1,100 square meters. To construct this subterranean aquatic kingdom, workers had to blast away a staggering 5,000 tons of solid bedrock. The resulting space holds ten times the water volume of the old exhibits and features 15 meticulously designed aquariums displaying diverse marine habitats from around the world. The absolute showstopper is the Coral Sea aquarium. Holding 400,000 liters of water and structured with 30 tons of natural coral stone, it stands as one of the largest living coral reef aquariums in all of Europe, allowing you to watch endangered stony corals develop over time. You can even live out your marine biology dreams for a day at the Ocean Lab research station or explore the fragile oceanic ecosystem in the Water Planet exhibit.
Spread across four vast floors, the museum perfectly bridges historic seafaring folklore with cutting-edge scientific research:
- Level 0 (Subterranean): The spectacular new aquarium world, the Water Planet exhibition, and the Ocean Lab research facility.
- Level 1 (Ground Floor): The brand-new museum bistro, Café One, and the fully stocked museum shop.
- Level 2: The captivating “Sea of Stories” exhibit and the “Heirs of the Shipyards” photographic installation. Here you can view Andrée’s polar boat from his Arctic expedition, original archival films from adventurer Signe Berlin, and historical correspondence from author Vilhelm Moberg.
- Level 3: A paradise for families featuring “The Great Blue” exhibition and the delightful Knattegatt playroom (a clever Swedish pun blending “knatte” – little toddler – and the Kattegat sea). You will also find the “Ships in Focus” gallery housing 30 stunning ship models ranging from simple wooden vessels to modern, gargantuan supertankers.
General admission is highly affordable, with free entry provided to students and all visitors under 20. Here is a brilliant local money-saving tip: you can purchase a Gothenburg Museum Card (“Museikort”) for just 150 SEK (2026), which grants you unlimited entry for a full calendar year to four major municipal highlights: the Sjöfartsmuseet Akvariet, the Gothenburg City Museum, the Röhsska Design Museum, and the Gothenburg Museum of Art.
On a deeply personal note, writing about this museum always fills me with immense nostalgia. Just a short distance away sits the wonderful Spar Hotel Majorna.
