There is no better way to experience the vast beauty of Sweden than a road trip. While many travelers previously explored this 1,800 km (approx. 1,120 miles) route by motorhome, the trend in 2026 has shifted toward the comfort of boutique hotels and rental cars.
This “Grand Circle” takes you from the vibrant west coast through the cultural heart of Dalarna, across to the majestic Stockholm, and back along the scenic southern shores.
Flexible starting points: Stockholm as your gateway
While this itinerary is designed as a circle starting in Gothenburg, it is just as easy to begin your journey in the capital. Since Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) is Sweden’s largest international hub, many travelers from overseas find it the most convenient place to pick up a rental car and start their adventure.
From Stockholm, you can simply join the circle and drive either clockwise toward the scenic south or counter-clockwise toward the cultural heart of Dalarna. Because it is a complete 1,800 km loop, you will return to your starting point without missing any of the major highlights.

The 14-day itinerary: Destinations & where to stay
While hotels are generally more affordable during the Swedish summer holidays (mid-June to mid-August), it is always advisable to book in advance to avoid higher “walk-in” prices.
Days 1-3: The wild west coast & Lake Vänern
Start your journey in Gothenburg before heading north into Bohuslän to see the stunning islands of Tjörn and Orust. This region is famous for its luxury seaside hotels. As you head inland, you will skirt the western shores of Lake Vänern, passing through Mellerud and over the Dalsland Canal.
- Stay in Gothenburg, a premier destination for culture and food. Explore the best boutique hotels in Gothenburg
- Stay further north on the west coast and find charming seaside stays in Bohuslän
- If you want to stay near Lake Vänern, both Vänersborg and Karlstad offer excellent options. Check prices for lakeside hotels in Karlstad
Days 4-7: The cultural heart (Värmland & Dalarna)
Head through Karlstad into northern Värmland. A must-see is the area around Lake Siljan, including the towns of Mora, Rättvik, and Leksand. This is the place to find traditional Swedish manor houses for a truly authentic stay. Don’t miss Falun, a designated World Heritage site, before moving toward the east coast.

- Stay in Falun: View top-rated hotels in Falun
Days 8-11: Stockholm & the Baltic coast
Arrive in Stockholm, a premier destination year-round. After a few days in the capital, head south via the E4 motorway. You will pass through historic Nyköping and Linköping, reaching the picturesque town of Gränna on the shores of Lake Vättern.
- Stay in Stockholm: From luxury waterfront hotels to boutique stays in Gamla Stan, the options are endless. See availability for Stockholm’s finest hotels
- Stay in Gränna: Famous for its peppermint candy, this town offers legendary lake views. Book a hotel with a view in Gränna
Days 12-14: Southern landscapes & Halland
The final leg takes you through Jönköping and the province of Småland. As you reach the coast at Helsingborg, you can head north through Halland, visiting charming coastal towns like Halmstad, Falkenberg, and Varberg before returning to Gothenburg.
- Stay in Halland: The coast is lined with premium spa hotels, especially in Halmstad and Varberg:
- Discover luxury spa resorts in Halmstad – I recommend the Hotel Tylösand.
- Discover luxury spa resorts in Varberg – I recommend Varbergs Kusthotell.
Renting a car in Sweden: What you need to know

Essential driving rules
- Lights on: You must drive with dipped headlights 24 hours a day.
- Safety belts: Compulsory for all passengers.
- Speed limits: Generally 50 km/h in towns (often 40 km/h in the south), 70 km/h on rural roads, and 110 km/h on motorways.
- Strict alcohol limits: The limit is a very low 0.2 per mille.
Understanding tolls & fees
Sweden uses an automatic Electronic Toll Service.
- Congestion taxes: Entering Stockholm and Gothenburg on weekdays incurs a fee. No fees during July, though.
- Infrastructure charges: Specific bridges (e.g., Motala, Sundsvall) have a small fee.
- How to pay: For rental cars, cameras record your license plate, and the rental company typically bills your credit card automatically. Always confirm the admin fee at the rental desk.
Fuel & logistics
- Sweden is nearly cashless, including at petrol stations.
- Payment: Most stations are unmanned “automat” stations where you must pay by card with a 4-digit PIN.
- Fuel types: Look for 95 Blyfri (unleaded), 98 Blyfri (super), and Diesel.
Insider tip: Fuel prices are often slightly lower on the west coast north of Gothenburg.
Scenic rest areas
- Sweden has 350 official rest areas.
- Top recommendation: Gyllene Uttern near Gränna offers a magnificent view over Lake Vättern.
- Facilities: Expect clean toilets, information boards, and picnic tables.
