Over the nearly three decades I have spent living, working, and traveling in Sweden, I have watched the remarkable transformation of Malmö’s most modern district firsthand. While the area is widely celebrated for its striking modern architecture, the true, energetic heart of the neighborhood beats right along its waterfront. This is where the city feels most active, yet completely laid-back. Tucked away from the typical tourist trails, you will find two absolute highlights that perfectly capture the authentic local lifestyle – ideal for anyone looking to experience Malmö like a true insider.
Scaniaparken and Scaniabadet: Malmö’s balcony on the open sea
In the northern part of Västra Hamnen, you will find Scaniaparken. This is an area that actually does not look much like a traditional park at all, lacking the typical abundance of trees and flowers. Instead, the park serves as a massive open playground for a mostly young crowd of visitors who come here to swim, sunbathe, play volleyball, or just listen to music. The park is tailored specifically toward sun-seekers, couples, and brave swimmers looking for an energetic coastal vibe.
Why you need to be an experienced swimmer
Here, it is not enough to just be brave – you genuinely need to be a strong swimmer. The swimming conditions at the park are characterized by a few strict realities:
- Deep-water swimming: The water drops straight down to about five meters deep, and there are noticeable currents. Shallow shores are completely non-existent here.
- Late summer sun: Because the shoreline faces northwest, it is the perfect spot to enjoy the final rays of the day late into the evening, provided it is not too windy.
- Convenient amenities: Just behind the waterfront promenade, you will find cafés where you can easily grab some refreshments. Keep in mind, though, that you cannot buy alcoholic beverages here, as that is not possible in Sweden outside of state-run stores or licensed venues.
The unmistakable Titanic feeling at the railing
The swimming area in the park, known as Scaniabadet, features a small platform that juts out into the open sea. Love locks hang from its railing, left behind by couples as a romantic gesture. Beyond that, this spot has become a highly popular photo opportunity. When you stand right at the edge of the railing and look down into the deep water below, a distinct “Titanic feeling” sets in.
During my visit, I felt instantly reminded of the famous “I’m flying” film scene featuring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, which takes place right at the bow of the Titanic.
Stapelbäddsparken: A concrete paradise for skateboarders
Just a short walk from the breezy coastline, you will hit another vibrant community hub. Since 2005, the ultra-modern district of Västra Hamnen has been home to a massively popular skateboard park. Known as Stapelbäddsparken, this concrete park spans an impressive 3,000 square meters. It draws youth from all over the city who gather here to skate and hang out. Occasionally, the park is even used to host high-profile skate competitions.
An unusual place to stay right by the skatepark
If you are looking for an accommodation that perfectly embodies Malmö’s eco-friendly, active lifestyle, the Ohboy Hotell is an absolute must. Built right next to Stapelbäddsparken, this highly unusual hotel with 31 rooms is a unique bike motel tailor-made for backpackers and urban explorers. The best part? Every single room comes with a free rental bicycle parked right outside your door, making it incredibly easy to cruise through this completely flat, bike-friendly city.

Innovative living in a dedicated bicycle house
The apartments at the Ohboy Hotell range between 22 and 24 square meters and are located right at street level. Each unit features its own private entrance, a small front garden, dedicated “parking spaces” for bicycles, a compact kitchen with a dining table, a private bathroom, a desk, and sleeping arrangements for up to three people.
The entire building is a fascinating project in modern urban development. Alongside the 31 hotel rooms, the complex houses 55 residential rental apartments. Yet, despite hosting dozens of residents and guests, the building features only a single car parking space. The structure in Malmö was envisioned and constructed from the ground up as a pure bicycle house, showing exactly how forward-thinking Swedish city life can be.
