Dog-Friendly Holiday Homes (Pets Allowed)

Sweden is a paradise for dog owners. With its vast forests, endless coastlines, and the unique Right of Public Access, it is one of the most welcoming countries in Europe for travellers with four-legged friends. As a tourism expert who has explored Sweden for decades, I know that a holiday home (stuga) provides the perfect, stress-free base for a vacation where your dog is treated as a true member of the family.

Traveling to Sweden with your dog

Entering Sweden with a dog is a straightforward process, provided you follow the official health and safety regulations. These rules are designed to keep Sweden free from rabies and other diseases, ensuring a safe environment for all pets.

  • ID marking: Your dog must be microchipped with an ISO-standard microchip before or at the same time as the rabies vaccination.
  • Rabies vaccination: A valid vaccination is mandatory. If it is the first vaccination, you must wait at least 21 days after the injection before entering the country.
  • EU pet passport: You must carry an official EU pet passport that documents the microchip ID and vaccination status.
  • Customs declaration: Every dog must be reported to the Swedish Customs (Tullverket). This can be done conveniently online before your trip or directly at the border.

Rules for a happy stay in nature

While Sweden is very dog-friendly, there are important rules to protect the local wildlife and ensure everyone can enjoy the outdoors.

  • Leash requirements: Officially, Swedish law requires dogs to be kept on a lead in the countryside from 1 March to 20 August to protect birds and mammals during the breeding season. However, as a visitor, you should be aware of the very strong social expectation to keep your dog leashed year-round in all forests, parks, and natural areas. Even outside the legal summer window, most Swedes expect you to have “control as if on a lead” at all times. In practice, this means keeping your pet on a leash is the norm to show respect for wildlife, livestock, fellow hikers, and joggers.
  • Where to let your dog run free: If your dog needs some exercise without a lead, look for fenced dog parks called “hundrastgårdar”, which are common in almost every Swedish town. These are great places for socialising and letting off steam. Some cities offer even more freedom; in Malmö, for example, the entire northern section of the Ribersborg beach (Ribersborgsstranden) is a designated year-round off-leash area where dogs are welcome to run and even take a swim in the sea.
  • National parks: Many national parks and nature reserves have even stricter rules, often requiring dogs to be on a short lead all year round. Always check the local information boards at the entrance.
  • No breed bans: Unlike some other European countries, Sweden has no general ban on specific dog breeds, though owners are always responsible for their dog’s behaviour.
  • Cleanliness: It is expected that you pick up after your dog. Most towns provide free waste bags, but it is best to always carry your own.

Tips for your booking

Because many holiday home owners in Sweden are pet lovers themselves, you will often find that “dog-friendly” truly means welcome. However, these popular houses tend to book up quickly, especially during the summer months and the autumn hiking season.
