Green Oases in the City: A Complete Guide to Malmö’s Most Beautiful Parks

Malmö is often celebrated for its coastal vibes, but its inner-city parks are the true green lungs where locals go to recharge. From historic castle gardens to sprawling lakeside paths and vibrant cultural hotspots, these green spaces offer a peaceful escape right in the heart of the city. Whether you are traveling with family, looking for a quiet spot to read, or wanting to experience local traditions, exploring these three iconic parks will show you a completely different, wonderfully relaxed side of Malmö.

Slottsparken and Slottsträdgården: An oasis next to the old town

Slottsparken and Slottsträdgården

Just half a kilometer west of the bustling Stora Torget and the historic old town, the city buildings suddenly give way to a vast expanse of green. This is where you enter Malmö’s green heart. Located just south of the historic Malmöhus Castle, you will find the beautiful Slottsparken and the colorful Slottsträdgården.

And the best part? Nestled inside the colorful castle garden is a charming garden café. Sitting among the trees, it is easy to forget that you are actually in the middle of a major city. While the historic Slottsparken dates all the way back to 1900, the organic Slottsträdgården is a much newer addition. It was originally opened in 1998 by a passionate group of local gardening enthusiasts who created a beautiful mix of utility and ornamental gardens.

Today, the garden is run by the city of Malmö and regularly hosts lively community events, such as local plant exchange days. For me, this peaceful oasis closely resembles the famous Rosendals Trädgård in Stockholm.

Here is a pro tip: If you are exploring on foot, you can easily combine your walk with a delicious food stop at the nearby Malmö Saluhall. This vibrant market hall is located roughly halfway between the city center and the castle park, making it the perfect place to pick up some local delicacies.

Beautiful places to stay near Malmö’s green spaces

To fully enjoy early morning walks through Slottsparken or a peaceful evening stroll around the city’s beautiful lakes, choosing a hotel near the central green belt is ideal. The areas surrounding these parks feature excellent boutique accommodations that place you just minutes away from both urban culture and natural tranquility.

Pildammsparken: Sprawling lakeside paths and quiet meditation

Pildammsparken

If you are traveling without a car and want to immerse yourself completely in nature, head straight to the southern edge of the city center. Here lies Pildammsparken, a massive 45-hectare sanctuary that proudly holds the title of Malmö’s largest park. Strategically positioned between the Opera to the north and the Stadium to the south, it is incredibly easy to reach by catching the city’s convenient number 3 bus ring line.

The park is centered around the beautiful Pildammarna, which were originally two separate ponds but have since been connected to form a stunning, large lake. Surrounding the water is a popular 1.5-kilometer lakeside path that is a favorite spot for local joggers. The park actually owes its unique name to the historic willow trees planted along the banks.

Whether you want to go for a run, sit down with a good book, listen to an outdoor summer concert, or relax at a garden café, this park has something for everyone.

If you are looking for absolute serenity, make sure to seek out the hidden Galatea Garden. This secluded spot is designed specifically for quiet meditation and peaceful reading. Don’t miss a walk past the elegant Margaretapaviljongen, a beautiful pavilion that highlights the park’s timeless charm.

Folkets Park: The world’s oldest amusement and cultural park

Folkets Park

For a completely different kind of park experience, make your way to Folkets Park, which stands as one of the most visited destinations in all of Sweden. This iconic space has a rich and fascinating history dating back to the late 19th century, making it the oldest folk park in the world – a vibrant space with deep roots in local community life. In its earliest days, it served as a dedicated workers’ park for the Social Democrats where historic strike rallies were frequently held. Over the decades, it evolved into a beloved city and amusement park, reaching its legendary golden era during the 1940s and 1950s.

Following a brief period of decline, the city of Malmö took over operations, triggering a massive second boom. Today, the park welcomes nearly three million visitors annually who come to stroll, enjoy a coffee, picnic on the lawns, or attend live concerts. It is an absolute paradise for families traveling with children, offering plenty of climbing and swinging playground equipment, as well as seasonal pony riding. There is even an exciting indoor terrarium on-site to explore for a small entry fee.

During the warm summer months, a small, vibrant fairground known locally as a Tivoli sets up inside the park, complete with classic bumper cars, a Ferris wheel, and colorful market stalls.

Experiencing a magical Halloween in the park

Folkets Park

While the park is a summer favorite, it is equally magical later in the year. I first visited Folkets Park in late October when a thick, atmospheric fog rolled over the city. As it turned out, the misty weather was the absolute perfect backdrop for the park’s spectacular annual Halloween celebration.

The entire grounds were beautifully transformed with hundreds of glowing pumpkins, rustic hay bales, flickering candles, and burning torches. The organizers had even built small earth mounds and placed mock tombstones throughout the grass, while spooky music and playful ghost roars echoed through the trees. Countless local children arrived in elaborate costumes, making use of the free face-painting stations set up around the park. It is a completely free community event that the city puts immense effort into organizing, and it proves just how vital this park remains in the hearts of the Malmö locals.

Admission to Folkets Park is always free, though keep in mind that the gates are locked late in the evening and overnight.
