Whenever I am in Malmö during the summer months, there is one activity I always recommend to friends visiting for the first time. While the city is wonderful to explore on foot or by bike, seeing it from the water offers a completely different perspective. Over the years, I have found that Malmö’s layout – with its historic canals encircling the heart of the city – is best appreciated from one of the flat “Rundan” sightseeing boats. It is relaxing, informative, and simply the best way to get your bearings in Sweden’s third-largest city.
If you have ever been to Gothenburg or Amsterdam, the setup here might feel familiar. The boats are low and open, providing 360-degree views of the passing scenery. In Malmö, this tour is locally known as Rundan (which literally translates to “The Round”). It is a classic for a reason.
What to expect on the Rundan tour
The tour takes you on a 45-minute loop through the city’s historic canal system. These waterways were once part of the city’s defense works, but today they serve as a peaceful corridor through the urban landscape.
As you glide along, you will pass under approximately 18 bridges – some of which are so low that you might find yourself instinctively ducking! The route takes you past a mix of old and new architecture. You will see the lush greenery of Kungsparken and Slottsparken, the historic Malmöhus Castle, and even catch glimpses of the modern Turning Torso skyscraper in the distance.
And the best part?
The live guides are usually excellent. They share stories about Malmö’s transition from a gritty industrial hub to a modern, green city, often with a good dose of local humor. Whether you are interested in history or just want to enjoy the breeze, it is a great use of 45 minutes.
Book your Malmö canal tour
The Rundan sightseeing tour is the most popular boat excursion in the city. Since the boats have limited capacity and only operate during the warmer months, I highly recommend booking your tickets in advance to secure your preferred departure time.

Practical details for your trip
Since this is a seasonal activity, timing is everything. Having lived and worked in Sweden for nearly three decades, I have seen many tourists arrive in October hoping for a boat tour, only to find the docks quiet.
Here is what you need to know:
- Season: The boats typically operate from the beginning of April until the end of September.
- Departure point: The tour starts and ends at Norra Vallgatan, located directly across from the Malmö Central Station. It is incredibly easy to find if you are arriving by train.
- Duration: The trip takes a good three quarters of an hour.
- Weather: The boats are completely open to ensure the best views (and to fit under those low bridges!). If it starts to rain, the staff will provide free rain ponchos for all passengers. However, I still recommend bringing a light jacket, as the wind on the water can be chilly.
A perfect introduction to the city
I often suggest taking this tour right at the beginning of your stay. It gives you a great overview of the different neighborhoods and helps you decide where you want to walk later.
Is it worth it?
Absolutely. It is a small investment of time that pays off in great photos and a deeper understanding of Malmö’s unique character. Just remember to book ahead during the peak weeks of July and August, as the boats fill up fast with both locals and international visitors.
