Stockholm’s Best Design and Concept Hotels
Stockholm is a world capital of design, and this is reflected in its diverse hotel landscape. In recent years, several unique hotel concepts have emerged, blending Scandinavian aesthetics with international influences. Whether you are looking for a historic atmosphere, a digital-first experience, or a peaceful spa retreat in the archipelago, Stockholm has a hotel that tells a story.
Haymarket by Scandic – Art deco elegance at Hötorget
One of the most impressive examples of a historic building being transformed into a modern landmark is the Haymarket by Scandic. Located in the former PUB department store at Hötorget, this hotel transports guests back to the 1920s. The interior is a masterpiece of art deco style, featuring original details combined with modern luxury.
The building’s history is particularly special as it is where a young Greta Garbo once worked as a shop assistant selling hats. Today, you can enjoy the atmosphere at the café Gretas or have a cocktail at the Americain bar. The hotel is centrally located, within easy walking distance of the central station and the shopping district.
Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel – The perfect hub for travelers
Located directly adjacent to the Stockholm Waterfront Congress Centre and only a three-minute walk from the Central Station, the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel is the ideal choice for business travelers and tourists alike. The hotel offers a sleek, modern design and spectacular views over the Riddarfjärden bay and the City Hall. Its location makes it one of the most convenient bases for exploring the city or catching an early train to the airport.
Downtown Camper by Scandic – The urban explorer’s base
This hotel, located at Brunkebergstorg, invokes a spirit of adventure. It is designed as a social hub where nature meets the urban landscape. Downtown Camper offers a modern, playful interior and unique room categories, such as the Camper Co-Living concept that can accommodate up to 12 people. Guests can join daily activities like running groups or relax at The Nest, a wellness area and cocktail lounge on the rooftop with panoramic views of the city.
Quality Hotel Strawberry Arena – Iconic design in Solna
Formerly known as Quality Hotel Friends, this hotel has been renamed to Quality Hotel Strawberry Arena. Standing 25 storeys high right next to the Strawberry Arena and the Mall of Scandinavia, it is a landmark in the event district of Solna. The hotel is known for its unique circular windows and a nordic interior style.
A highlight is the Social Bar & Bistro on the 25th floor, offering magical views over Solna and Stockholm. Staying on the upper floors provides an unforgettable panorama. The atmosphere in the bar is pleasantly relaxed with friendly, down-to-earth staff – making it the perfect spot for a glass of wine before a very short walk back to your room.
Scandic Go, Upplandsgatan 4 – Smart and digital
The hotel formerly known as HTL Upplandsgatan has been rebranded as Scandic Go, Upplandsgatan 4. This hotel focuses on the modern, conscious traveler who values high quality and smart digital solutions. With the ability to use your smartphone as a room key and a lounge designed for both work and spontaneous meetings, it offers a hassle-free stay in the heart of Norrmalm.
Classic elegance at the Grand Hôtel Stockholm
For those seeking traditional luxury, the Grand Hôtel Stockholm remains the premier choice. Since 1874, it has occupied a prime waterfront position opposite the Royal Palace. The hotel is home to the Michelin-starred restaurants of Mathias Dahlgren and the classic Veranda, which serves a traditional Swedish Christmas smorgasbord (“julbord”) every December.
Modern history at Hotel Kung Carl and Scandic Anglais
Stockholm’s oldest hotel, Hotel Kung Carl at Stureplan, recently celebrated its 150th anniversary. Each of its 143 rooms is unique, featuring different styles and furnishings.
Nearby, the Scandic Anglais at Stureplan offers a vibrant atmosphere with its 19-metre long bar and a rooftop terrace with great city views. The hotel is also famous for its extensive breakfast buffet and its “cabin” rooms for budget travelers.
Central business hotels: Scandic Continental and Best Western and hotel
The Scandic Continental is perhaps Stockholm’s most central business hotel, located directly across from the Central Station. It features the rooftop bar Capital, where you can enjoy the skyline.
Another affordable and highly functional option is the Best Western and hotel (often written as &hotel) on Apelbergsgatan. It offers compact rooms with smart design and generous public social areas.
Unique retreats: Yasuragi and Smådalarö Gård
If you want to escape the city pulse, Stockholm offers two exceptional retreats.
The Yasuragi Japanese Spa Hotel in Saltsjö-Boo provides a unique blend of traditional Japanese culture and modern Scandinavian elegance. It features Japanese baths and an exhibition titled “ABBA in Japan,” highlighting the connection between the two cultures.
In the Stockholm archipelago, the Smådalarö Gård Hotell & Spa offers a relaxed environment in a 19th-century manor house. The hotel has undergone extensive renovations and features its own 9-hole golf course as well as a large spa area.

When to book: Major events in Stockholm
Stockholm’s unique design and concept hotels are highly sought after. During major fairs and sporting events, hotel capacity in the city center can reach its limits quickly. To secure your favorite room at a reasonable rate, I recommend booking up to a year in advance – especially during the following recurring events:
- January (mid-month) – Formex (interior design)
- February (beginning) – Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair
- April (even years) – Nordbygg (construction industry)
- May (end) – Elitloppet (harness racing)
- June (beginning) – Stockholm Marathon
- July (end) – Stockholm Pride
- August (mid-month) – Stockholm Culture Festival and Midnight Race
- August (end) – Formex (interior design)
- September – Lidingöloppet (cross-country race)
- November (end) – Sweden International Horse Show
If your travel dates coincide with these events, using a flexible booking platform allows you to lock in a price early while remaining adaptable.
